This Thursday Night, nightlife/culture blog, The Downtown Diaries will be celebrating its 1 Year Anniversary Party at The Eldridge.
Not only will some of the hottest people be there but some of your favorite DJs will be there as well including MSB, The Chainsmokers, and Messkid. You know it can’t be a party without ridiculous photos of what goes down. So of course, Kirill Was Here will be snapping the night away.
Since 1 Year is a significant time for any affair, we wanted to see how a person finally felt to fill those shoes . Lucky enough, we were able to catch an interview with The Downtown Diaries creator, Kristina Marino.
JP: For those that don’t know about The Downtown Diaries, can you give us a brief background/history?
KM: The Downtown Diaries is a nightlife and culture blog revolving around all things below 14th street and Brooklyn. Within my blog, I try to encapsulate the downtown lifestyle which includes a lot of partying, but also going to art galleries, shopping, and even getting tattoos. I just wrapped up a huge event I planned and needed a website. My website about my events turned in to a blog about events I went too or wanted to go to. From there, it just kinda snowballed. I live Williamsburg, two blocks from where my family settled almost 100 years ago. I like going out in the city during the week and I rarely leave Brooklyn on the weekends. I like having the option to do both – it’s the best of both worlds – and I try and highlight that in my blog.
JP: How does it feel to have had your blog up and running for 1 year now?
KM: I cant believe it’s been a year already!!! So much has happened- I feel straight out of that Drake song! (haha.) The site has definitely come a long way – but I am all about reinventing the wheel. I am still growing as a writer and my site is still evolving. There’s always new technology and trends you have to stay on top of as a blogger. I have learned a lot in the past year but I am not done yet.
JP: What’s your fan base like? How do you deal with the positive and negative comments?
KM: I love my fans and my readers def keep me going. Haters are gonna hate, BUT they do give me insight too. I think there is a huge misconception about me – that I am pretentious and claim to be some nightlife impresario – but that’s the further thing from the truth. I am as real as they get and I don’t claim to be anything.
JP: What has been the most memorable experience you’ve had with the blog?
KM: I remember the my first linkback- I was so excited! That’s the exact moment I realized people were listening; not only my friends, but other media sources too. And obviously getting recognized and hearing, “You are ‘The Downtown Diaries?! I know you!” Those are always memorable moments- especially when it’s coming from the founder of Urban Daddy. That was def a highlight in my blogging career.
JP: What’s on the agenda for the future of both Downtown Diaries and yourself?
KM: Well…I was working on a TV pilot with a major TV network based around The Downtown Diaries…until MTV decided to produce “Downtown Girls” – a show about a blogger and her circle of friends living in New York. That’s all I’ll say about that…for now. I love hosting events and hopefully will get to do more of that in the upcoming year. And like I said before, my site is no where near being finished – there’s still a lot I want to do with it. Other than that, I just go with the flow – that’s my motto.
JP: What can we expect for Thursday Night’s Anniversary Party at the Eldridge?
KM: You can expect great music by my fave DJs and good friends – The Chainsmokers, MSB, and Messkid. A diverse crowd of talented, creative, and inspiring people. And lots of booze! SVEDKA and Spaten Lager will be throwing down and Vita Coco and Perrier will be there to make sure you are a little less hungover the next day. I have butterflies already! I have a ton of friends – all from different social circles – and everyone attending has played an integral role in the success of my blog. I am really excited to have my biggest support system all under the one roof.
