This is refreshing.  After a scary moment in Paris with a celebrity starlet pushing heart shaped pasties to be the next red carpet look, an old Hollywood Glamour couturier comes back in the spotlight.  Phew!

Old Parisian line, Vionnet, has shown up on the red carpet twice recently.  Hilary Swank wore a gorgeous draped evergreen dress, evoking the spirit of the way Hollywood icons used to dress, as did Carry Mulligan.  Hilary is promoting her new movie, Amelia, based on 30’s fashion icon  Amelia Earhart (yes, she was known to be quite a sharp dresser).

For those not familiar with Madame Vionnet, she was instrumental in changing the way women dressed in the early 20th century.  She shunned corsets and padding and instead used draping inspired by ancient Greek art to draw attention to the true female form.

Her dresses appeared on old Hollywood icons like Katherine Hepburn, Greta Garbo, and Marlene Dietrich.  Hilary wearing Vionnet to her premier was in no doubt a nod to to the Madame who influenced such 1930’s icons.

It is so refreshing to see classy glamour return to the red carpet.  Perhaps this signals a return to a more simplistic way of dressing.  Lately we’ve been seeing a lot of cut outs in dresses to show off the curves, but for the more modest, draping is the new body con.
