Paul Kasmin To Turn Bungalow 8 Into An Art Gallery
It is finally official that Bungalow 8 will never rise from the dead. Paul Kasmin is turning it into an art gallery and both he and Amy Sacco are pretty excited about it.
In a way it is beautiful how the club has come full circle. Sacco had the idea for Bungalow 8 after seeing the late Jeremy Blake‘s Bungalow 8 show at Feigen Contemporary. But the current state of the venue is anything but:
The photo murals of the Beverly Hills Hotel pool had been ripped from the walls, the palm trees are slumped over in various states of decay, and the iconic booths and neon green lattice below the glass roof appeared to be rotting amidst the flotsam of nightclub detritus: matchbooks, membership cards, bottles of liquor bearing former proprietor Amy Sacco’s name. An old game of Clue was sitting in pieces on a half-shattered cocktail table. [Art Info]
Kasmin plans to “paint the walls, get rid of the bar (and DJ booth above), and put on a clear façade to make it ‘very, very white and clean.’” Hopefully that will liven it up a bit since he says the venue currently has “an air of death to it.”
R.I.P. Bungalow 8. Apparently Sacco is hard at work planning another New York spot, but nothing compares. Nothing compares. To you…
