The Darby Downstairs Is Bringing Gay Back Into Style
In case you haven’t noticed, Sunday night is gay night. From Greenhouse to Griffin to the Hotel Gansevoort and a ton of places in between, Sunday has been reserved for gay parties.
Clubs realized there was a market, and instead of staying closed on Sundays, they figured they could make some extra money.
Until now. The Darby Downstairs is getting their civil rights movement on. Richie Akiva has said “Many famous gays came here when it was Nell’s, and we’re trying to bring back that old-school fabulous gay culture, mixing socialites and gangsters.”
The meaning of socialite has changed, and MPD clubs don’t allow gangsters, or even thugs for that matter, but maybe, just maybe the old-school fabulous gays and the new-school fabulous straights can convene over cocktails during the week.
