Last night I spent the night viewing the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show taping and hitting up the after party at M2. An epic night of celebs, models, and mayhem ensued, but what else would you expect when you put 20 of the most beautiful girls in the world in one room?
Last Sunday wasn’t the only day that the clocks were turned back. Last night Lord and Taylor travelled back in time for a full on 80’s shopping extravaganza. I really didn’t realize just how nostalgic it would be until I heard Lisa Lisa perform All Cried Out and all of the sudden my hair was crimped, my lips were stained bright pink, and I was covered in neon.
It’s official: the vampire trend is everywhere. Wednesday night, author Melissa De La Cruz threw a party for her latest Blue Blood series book, The Van Alen Legacy, with an invitation to dress like Vampires.
The Blue Bloods are a group of ancient vampires among New York’s elite society, so what happens when you throw a party and ask the guests to dress as vampires? Well, it seems that when you pose that question to New Yorkers, no one really changes anything about their outfits. Everyone wears a staple uniform of black anyway. So if you take away the red mood lighting, the blood red cocktails, and vampire books lining the walls, it would be just another night out in New York.
Most of the party girls wore black sheath dresses with tights and black pants with white shirts and blazers. Pretty atypical for vampires, but in their defense, what do vampires actually dress like? It looked like everyone had asked themselves that question pre-party.
I decided to wear all black with a giant Chanel jewel encrusted cross to ward off any preying Vampires (I did go to the party solo after all) and I felt like I fit right in. Perhaps the mystery surrounding vampires is what fuels our fascination. They are more like mythical creatures than real people walking down Sixth Avenue.
Lately, it seems everyone has different ideas of how to translate this trend into fashion. The most decked out person at the party was Burlesque Performer Veronica Varlow who engaged us all with a vampire dance. She was dressed in loads of lace, fishnets, red lipstick, and a corset.
A few weeks ago, one of the Project Runway contestants also flirted with the trend. He left out the velvet, lace, and anything vampy and did more of an Edwardian vampire bride while the girls of Twilight dress like normal Oregon high school students in jeans and sweaters.
So maybe the surge of modern day vampires is just confusing us all. Because let’s be honest, if there are vampires dispersed in the social circles of New York, my guess is that they would most likely be hanging at the Jane Hotel with the rest of the downtown hipsters wearing the latest Alex Wang cut out dress.
